Design & Technology - The Oakmeadow Way

Intent:

At Oakmeadow, our intent for Design and Technology is to provide a stimulating and enriching learning experience that equips our learners with the necessary knowledge, skills, and creativity to become confident designers and problem solvers and ensure they are using design and technology effectively in their everyday lives to live life in all its fullness. We aim to foster a deep understanding of the design process, promote innovation and sustainable practices, and encourage collaborative working to ensure our children are adequately prepared to transition to KS3.

Implementation:

To meet our intent, we follow a broad and balanced Design and Technology curriculum that builds on previous learning and provides both support and challenge for learners. We use a Design and Technology scheme (Kapow) to support planning and to ensure progression of knowledge and skills . The scheme provides engaging and well-planned lessons that provide a balance between teacher-led instruction and learner-led activities. It also provides teachers with the necessary resources, tools, materials, and latest technologies, to enhance learning experiences and promote high-quality teaching. All classes will teach two units of Design and Technology alongside three cooking units.

Impact:

We hope for our children to enjoy and value Design and Technology and know why they are doing things, not just how. Children will understand and appreciate the value of Design and Technology in the context of their personal wellbeing and the creative and cultural industries and their many career opportunities.

Progress in Design and Technology is demonstrated through:

  • Regular formative and summative assessment opportunities that inform teachers of learners' progress and allow for support where required.
  • Verbal feedback, and discussions with the children about what they know. This highlights strengths, areas for improvement, and next steps, enabling learners to refine and develop their designs effectively.
  • Observing how children perform in lessons
  • Opportunities for self-assessment and peer assessment or evaluations, promoting metacognitive skills and collaborative learning.

The Design and Technology curriculum will contribute to our children’s holistic development by developing their creativity, independence, judgement and self-reflection. This would be seen in them being able to talk confidently about their work and sharing their work with others.
