EDIB in Science

Intent:

The intent of integrating the principles of Equality, Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging (EDIB) in science education at Oakmeadow C of E Primary School is twofold. Firstly, it aims to create an inclusive environment where all pupils, including those from diverse backgrounds, feel welcomed, valued, and represented in science lessons. Secondly, it intends to promote social justice and prepare pupils to work in a diverse society by developing scientific knowledge and skills that can be used to address global challenges faced by different communities.

Implementation:
To achieve the intent of integrating EDIB in science, the school will take the following measures:

1. Ensure that science topics are chosen based on the diverse interests and experiences of pupils, and that they reflect a range of cultural, social, and environmental perspectives.

2. Develop resources that reflect diversity by using pictures, diagrams, videos, and texts that represent different cultures, ethnicities, abilities, and languages.

3. Embed EDIB themes and issues throughout the science curriculum, including exploring contributions of diverse scientists, discussing the effects of science on different groups, and exploring the interplay of science with social, cultural, and ethical issues.

4. Encourage active participation and engagement of all pupils in science lessons, using strategies such as peer tutoring, collaborative learning, and differentiated instruction that meet the diverse needs of pupils.

5. Develop a culture of respect, tolerance, and empathy in science lessons, promoting positive behaviour and maintaining safe, inclusive classroom environments.

6. Develop effective communication channels with pupils, staff, parents, and the wider community to promote awareness and understanding of EDIB in science lessons.

Impact:

The impact of implementing EDIB in science at Oakmeadow C of E Primary School will be evaluated by the following outcomes:

1. Pupil engagement, motivation, and performance in science will improve, with all pupils feeling valued, included, and able to achieve their full potential.
2. Pupils' understanding of scientific concepts will be enhanced by exploring diverse perspectives and their relationship to real-world problems.
3. Pupils will develop positive attitudes towards science as a tool for social change and show increased interest and investment in STEM careers.
4. The school will develop greater cultural competence and awareness of the importance of EDIB in science education, promoting equity and social justice.
5. The school will develop effective partnerships with the wider community to promote science education that is inclusive, equitable, and respectful of diversity.

We believe that all children should view themselves as scientists, irrespective of their age, gender, race or ethnicity.
